Back to the South Island

I spent 3 days down south in Queenstown riding the gondola. All i have to say is.. I LOVE IT DOWN IN QUEENIE! The riding is epic.. gnarly, steep, rocky, rooty downhill with an uplift. What more can you ask for. I arrived on Wednesday at 3:00, met up with my mate, built our bikes up and then headed straight up the gondola. In 3 hours we managed to get in 7 runs and finished with an epic last run down my favorite track!

Amped after the ride we hit up the Atlas where we met some locals, drank too many beers and had the night disappear on us. Next morning was welcomed with a headache and hangover.. luckily it was raining so there was no riding to be had.

Friday was an intense day. The gondola starts running at 10am and we were first in line. It was going to be a gruelling day of runs.. The plan was to get in as many runs as possible.. we hit a couple secret tracks that you have to push too. These trails are not maintained like many of the other tracks in the park, making it more intense/fun to ride. To me that is what riding is all about.. goat like trails that are untouched wtih an element of sketchiness. At one point we were actually chasing a wild goat down the trail. If you come off on a trail like this.. it’s going to hurt and help wont be coming to get you anytime soon. We hit this track a couple times in the morning and then it was lunch break. We had a good feed and then got back on the bike. By late avo my body was feeling the laps. We hit up a double black diamond track and it was here i had my only crash of the trip.. steep and fast i was hard on the breaks and they werent working. Heading for trees i layed it down in hopes to not break my body.. luckily i came out unscathed, but from that run i knew that was the last double black of the day. I ended up banging my derailieur pretty good, which bent it. I could still ride, but shifting was an issue. I rode some easier of the tracks and finished the day in one piece… winning!

That night was filled with a couple beers and early to bed. We rode of 9 hours and managed to do 21 laps. I was pretty happy with that, even with a crash!

I flew out the next day, with hopes of soon returning.

Bike Rage in New Zealand

Check out this lycra wearing fat bastard rage on this other mountain biker. He ended up getting charged with assault and rightly so. I dont think the other cyclist was innocent either, he was egging him on a bit and on his tail. I think he is a bit of a pussy for letting the old man push him around, plus when the old guy pokes him he says ‘ thats assualt.’  ahah what a tosser… both of them need to chillout.

And about a week later an old man toss around some bmxer’s in Christchurch as well. I guess these little punks were tossing stones and being complete idiots, so he handed them a bit of old school justice! I love when the kids call him on he doesnt back down and just toss them about. Good on ya old dude.

On Saturday I was out a woodhill riding and approached a jump to find a woman in the middle of the trail with two bikes. I locked it up and was able to stop before the end of the lip. I said oi and then turned around to get the speed up again. Hit the line and carried on. Didnt think anything of it really. I wasnt being disrepectful, just wanted her to know i was there and to not walk up the trail… it could have ended with me creaming her.  After my ride I headed back to the car park and was putting my bike in the boot when the guy approaches me farily aggressively saying… i dont like how you talked to my family. All i said was oi and he then told me there was a nicer way to say it.. true. I could have said excuse me, so I appologized. He then he appologized for his family walking up the trail.. they should have known better. Really man! Senseless eh!

A Weekend On The Bike

Car

My rides! The car is perfect for tossing the bike in the back and escaping the city for some sweet trails in Rotorua or Woodhill. Car = freedom!

This past weekend I was able to make it up to Rotorua with Kev and Mario. I haven’t been out riding with these guys for a while. Mario has been in Canada for the last month riding at Whistler and Kev has been busy with home renos. We left Auckland around 6:15am and were in Rotorua around 9:15… not bad time. We unloaded the bikes headed for the shuttle.

We started off with Billy T which is a fast smooth downhill track. It has this one really steep roll over that if you think about it too much you wont do it. After Billy T we hit up Huckle Berry which is filled with jumps, lots of fun. We rode that track heaps, it was wet to start but by mid afternoon the track had dried up quite a bit. Which meant.. fast! We would ride the top of huckle berry and then tie into the bottom of the national downhill track, which is a pretty crazy track.

On the 7th and last run of the day my forearms were burning, and I was pretty much just hanging on for dear life ahaha. It was a great day of riding! My bike was caked in mud and needed a good clean. I decided I would try and get on the bike the next day and clean it afterwards.

Once back in Auckland I took Michelle out to La Procheta, which is a pizza and pasta joint. It is pretty good food and ok service. The prices are great, which keeps up coming back. After dinner we were both beat so it was a movie and then off to bed.

Sunday morning I woke up early and headed to Woodhill Mountain Bike Park for a couple hours of riding while Michelle was at work. This was the maiden voyage in my car. No problems, it got me there and back! Woodhill was heaps of fun, not as good as Rotorua, but still good. It doesn’t have as nice of tracks compared to Rotorua, but it has heaps of jumps and gaps you can play on. I managed to put in 3 hours out their and headed back to Auckland.

Sunday was father’s day in New Zealand, so Michelle and I went to her parents place for dinner. They made some great bbq. I miss having my own bbq! Michelle’s mom made some amazing fresh bread on the bbq and her dad bbq’d some sausage, chicken and pork. It was a hell of a feed. Damn good weekend! Managed a lot of time on the bike, so I was one happy boy! I love the freedom of my own car. Debating on hitting up Rotorua this coming weekend.

Moutain Biking in Dunedin: Day 2

Specialized Demo8... my ride for the day!

Specialized Demo8... my ride for the day!

Today’s riding was all about downhill. Mark has a trail that he and a couple buddies use and it’s awesome. I was up early too try and take my shit bike back, but they opened at 10:30am and I wanted to be out at Mark’s by then. I decided I would leave the bike in the hostel and then hitch hike out to Waitati to meet up with Mark. It took me about an ½ hour to get picked-up.

Scott, a 30 something Kiwi, who moved down to Dunedin to work on the new stadium, was kind enough to pullover. He tossed his pug dog to the floor (it seemed the dog wasn’t happy to be giving his spot up to a stranger) and gave me a lift to Waitati. He was a really nice guy, who hitched all over Europe and felt he was just paying it back by giving me a lift. He dropped me at the local Dairy and I called Mark to come get me.

Mark was there to pick me up in about 10mins and we then headed back to his place to load up the bikes. Mark lives in a wing of an old hospital. It’s pretty sick! He has a nature reserve surrounding his place – amazing views!

He decided to lend me his 2008 Specialized Demo – a big, heavy downhill bike. This was a great bike for me to have, especially on this track – it could just bomb down the hill.

Once we loaded up the bikes we headed to Marks buddies place in the Seacliff area. His name was Pete and he had built a lot of the trails in the area. He had a big north shore structure on his front lawn – Awesome! We unloaded and had a chat with Pete – real nice guy and supposedly hell of a rider. He’s getting over a hernia so he’s off the bike for now. Mark and I then headed off down the road, took a right on a gravel road and biked for about 1km. We then lifted our bikes over a barbwire fence and biked into the native forest. We rode for a short distance and then it got way too steep to ride. It was time for hike-a-bike.

This was the most physically exhausting thing of the day; the task was pushing/carrying 40 pound bike up very steep terrain, was a hell of a workout! It took us about 30 mins of hike-a-bike to get to the top of this trail. This trail had everything I would want in a downhill trail. It had three really technical spots where you had to enter with caution or you would eat it, some steep roll-ins, small kickers, rock drops and some smooth cornering with really tight lines. It wasn’t as well manicured as the track we rode yesterday (Switchback track), but it was a true downhill track. Mark called it a goat trail as it was narrow and windy and wasn’t overally manicured – kind of natures trail. The first trip down the hill was pretty good – I managed to ride one of the three of the really technical parts. I did get tossed at one corner as I came in too hot and had lost my line and then there was a sketchy rock drop between two trees. You had to drop in slowly, hit the rear the break to swing around the back to make the next drop between two rocks and keep the line as it was a really tight section where it would be easy to fuck yourself up if you bailed. You wouldn’t want to spill in this section as bailing options weren’t good. I lost my nerve looking at it – I didn’t want to just huck it as it was very unforgiving. For my first ride down I was happy. Yah I bailed in a two spots, but that’s mountain biking and it was my first ride down the track. Mark is a jack-rabbit when he rides. Dude can rip and it is impressive to watch. He is all about going fast! I learnt a great deal by riding behind him and watching where he picked his lines. I found that if I would just lay off the breaks and follow him I would ride smoother! After a beer brake, we decided it was time to head back up.

Another 30mins of hike-a-bike and we were at the top again. The climbing was exhausting! Im sure my legs will be feeling it tomorrow! This time down I was way too loose and ended crashing in three spots. I rode two of the technical spots, but my nerve for the technical tree/rock drop wasn’t there. I did feel more cornering was really good as I drifted through a couple – pretty sweet feeling.

At the bottom we decided we would go work on cutting a corner and so the third time we hiked the hill with our bikes. I was definitely feeling it now. We got to the corner we wanted to work on and we moved a bunch of soil and added it to the top of a drop. We worked at it for about 45mins then Mark said it was time to ride again. We grabbed out bikes and went the rest of the way up. At the top we had a beer, he showed me the bush and explained some of the trees and nature. There was this tree, a Lampwood that only grows in two areas of NZ. The Maori used to make walking sticks as they were bendable when wet and then very strong once the dried out. I loved the info about the forest; Mark was pretty knowledgeable.

Bye this time it was 3:30pm and I decided this would be my last run since I had to hitch hike back into Dunedin and wanted to do so in sunlight. Knowing that this was my last ride on this trail for a while, I was planning on hitting everything and trying to get one clean run in. I tried to stay on Marks back wheel and it worked well for me. I hit everything and rolled through the rock/tree drop section no problem. I kind of let it all hang out and it was sweet as! It was a great feeling and I hope to come back and get some more riding in. He and his buddies have what sounds like an 8-9 day bike trip planned and Im going to try go, if my schedule/fitness/bike skills permit. Sounds epic! Mark then took me back to the dairy and we parted ways. I just want to say thanks to Mark for everything. I never would have ridden or found such amazing trails without him. He hooked me up with a bike and was the coolest guy. Cheers for that!

I then waited on the side of the road for about 25 mins before someone picked me up. An older couple in there 50’s picked stopped and we chatted about what I was doing in NZ until we got into Dunedin. Im going to get a good feed in, and hit the head early. Back to work tomorrow – but ill be day dreaming of Mark’s downhill track. Another great day of riding!
