Travel insurance is an important purchase before you leave home. It is equally important to know what is covered and what isn’t. We had a traveller come through the office a while ago who had everything he owned stolen. I guess he had left all of his stuff in his car (stupid move) while he went to the bar and the car ended up getting stolen with all of his worldly possessions. Now if he hadn’t of bought the cheapest travel insurance possible he would have been covered for losing all of his possession, but since it was the cheapest he was covered for hardly anything. On the other hand I knew someone who hurt himself in a half-pipe and ended up in the hospital with a bill of $152,000. He had full coverage and that bill was covered. Wouldn’t you be kicking yourself in the ass if you had only spent $500 more for that full coverage? It is money well spent, hell just for the piece of mind.
I know that when you are planning your trip you try to save money, but insurance is something not too skimp on. If you plan to do any sporting activities: skiing, snowboarding, surfing, mountain biking make sure your plan covers that. This is something you need to speak with your travel agent about and be thorough. A lot of people travel with expensive laptops and cameras, find out what your insurance will cover. Usually the insurance company will not cover expensive items i.e. mountain bikes. I had a heck of time finding somewhere to insure my bike, but managed too in the end.
So take the time to research insurance that will suit your travel plans. Make sure if will cover what you are taking on the trip and don’t think, it wont happen to me as those can me famous and expensive last words.

This week I booked some vacation time over the christmas holidays- Dec 24th to Jan 10th . Michell has the time booked off as well and now we have the tough decision of figuring out what we are going to do. We’ve come up with a couple of options and I am tossing it out to the public. If you have a suggestion please leave a comment otherwise pick one of the options I have listed and mention why maybe… thanks!
a) Sea kayaking the Marlborough Sounds
b) Tramping back country
c) Great Barrier Island

Living in Auckland during the winter you have to get used to rain. I mean a lot of rain. The first part of the winter was sunny with showers, but more recently it has been day after day of rain. I would honestly prefer snow to all of this rain. This last month it has been wet pretty much everyday and it is starting to get to me. It is tough to get out to do anything when it is pissing down rain, but that is life in Auckland. You walk to work in the rain, take your lunch in the rain, head home in the rain.. bloody rain! The season is coming to an end and for me it cant here quick enough. I guess that is why New Zealand is so green – all the damn rain. My advice would be; bring good wet gear, invest in an umbrella, save all indoor tourist spots for the winter and expect to get wet!

So Michelle and I picked up a fish when we moved to NZ. We both would love to get a dog, but with the size of our apartment and not knowing where we will settle; Canada or New Zealand, it doesn’t make much sense to add a dog into the mix. Back home in Canada we had an asian fighting fish named hercules. Must say he was a pretty good fish and I loved to take a mirror to his bowl to get him all riled up! If you have a fighting fish and you haven’t done that, well you must now! The puff up their gills and act all big – pretty funny!
We wanted to get another one like Herc, but they were pretty hard to find and when we did they were $$$ here, so we got a googly eyed black gold fish – no that is not the proper scientific name believe it or not. I asked my nephew, who is 4 yrs old to name it and he came up with Francine – random – i know. Francine has been heaps of entertainment! She lives upside down. At first she would sleep vertically and now she lives totally upside down. Swims around, sleeps – all upside down. She would do kart-wheels around the bowl. Never seen a fish do this. Michelle did some research and it turns out that it has gotten air in it which has thrown its balance off! WTF eh! So the solution is too feed it green pea’s (which is a fish laxative) so it shits out the air. We’ve done that and francine went back to normal for a day and then she was back to kart-wheeling across the bowl. I think she likes getting hopped up on air and kart-wheeling through the bowl effortlessly.
Would you get pet while abroad?

My liver needs a break. Ive been on the piss for 3 straight days and I need a rest. It started with a pub crawl on Thursday, which had copious amounts of shots, beers and then some more jager bombs! For $10 you go to 4 pubs/clubs and get a free drink at each one. There are heaps of prizes to be won ie Stay travel passes, hotel accommodation, drinks!! I lasted until about 3:30am and the party was still in full force. The crawl was awesome! There were heaps of backpackers and if you plan on spending anytime in Auckland you will have to take part in one of these. It’s through Freinz hostel and it has been getting bigger and bigger every week. It can get pretty messy, with a touch of nudity but it is a backpacker pub crawl so one can only expect these things.
I had Friday off to go check out some vehicles. No luck, but tomorrow is another day. That evening I had a social function at work. Usually they are pretty tame but this one got carried away. Ended up at the Fat Camel with a couple co-workers; dancing, drinking and more shots. My liver hates me. Rolled home around 2:30 am…
Saturday I just did some chores around the house and then headed to a Roller Derby game with Michelle, her sister and some friends from work. The game was great. Cant have a bad time at roller derby. After the game there was a party at the Whammy bar. Michelle and her sister had to work the next day so they went home, I went to the bar. Why – I don’t know. The bar was really cool. It was a rock bar – dark, dingy, with a cool rock-a-billy band playing. I definitely love these kinds of bars. Very much like the bovine sex club back in Toronto. It was a great time. Got to meet a lot of the derby girls and ended up drinking double whiskeys all night – why – I don’t know. Went home around 2am..
Woke up Sunday and I was bleary-eyed. I had plans to go for a ride so I waited around for my ride and out to woodhill bike park. Funny thing is my ride was in rougher shape than me ahah So she only wanted to ride for 2 hours, which I was ok with ehehe. I usually try to get in 4hours but with the shape I was in, 2 was good! I had to get off the bike twice as I thought I was going to spew. Never did, but at the time it felt like I was going too. I was happy with getting out and sweating out some booze. I felt pretty good on the bike and was flying pretty fast. Maybe it was the booze but I was definitely hanging off the breaks. After the ride Michelle and I did some grocery shopping and then I made some dinner. By the evening I was beat. I think I need to take sometime off of the booze. Feeling like shit on the bike is never good and more importantly a good reminder to reign in it and stop being such a piss head.

So I’ve decided that I want to buy a car. I’ve been getting great rates from Jucy Rentals since I work in the industry, but with spring quickly approaching they will need there entire fleet to rent out to tourists. I have to say that I really hate looking to buy a car. I would actually pay someone else to do this. If it were for a bike I would be happy as hell, but I just don’t really know that much about cars so it just feels like a huge gamble. I’ve been looking at sites like http://www.trademe.co.nz and there is a lot out there. I want to spend between $2000-$3000.. preferably $2000. But I guess I will see what’s out there. The cars I’ve been watching online have started off around $2000 but quickly get up to around $3000. Ive spoken with Jucy and am going to look at some of the rentals they are selling. I know with there cars that they have been taken care of, even though they have high mileage. Hopefully I can get this wrapped up soon. Wish me luck!

While I was away on the Stray trip Broken Social Scene came to Auckland. Michelle scored some tickets but unfortunately I was unable to attend. I asked Michelle to guest blog about the show.

Broken Social Scene at the Kings Arms, Auckland NZ
Last night I went to finally see BSS perform at one of Auckland’s Kings Arms Tavern. The Kings Arms is one of the oldest pubs in town with one of the biggest and sunniest garden bars around.
The ‘K.A’ is the city’s premiere rock’n’ roll venue with live music 4 or 5 nights a week and in the garden bar on Sunday afternoons.
BSS for those of you who dont know are an Indie rock band from Toronto. I cannot keep track of how many band members there actually are, but there are quite a few. Ive missed these guys on 2 separate occassions in Toronto so I was stoked to see them in my hometown. Unfortunately for Mike he was away on a work trip so he missed the show. Luckily I managed to convince one of his workmates, Katie, to go along with me to the show. She agreed eventhough she had never even heard of BSS before. We met up for some dinner at one of my favourite Japanese restaurants in town, Renkon. This place is tiny and is always packed, good luck getting a seat. They have an agreement with the bar next door where you can have a drink and they allow you to eat your dinner at the same time.So all you have to do is order your dinner and head next door to wait for your food to arrive – service! After dinner we headed to the beer store and picked up a bottle of pre-mixed Pomegranate cosmopolitan which was delicious. I then gave Katie the grand tour of Le Chateau de Michelle et Mike, we finished our drinks and caught a cab to the tavern which was about 5 minutes away. The first thing I noticed was that everyone seemed really young, which made me feel really old. The opening act was a kiwi band called Dictaphone Blues who had a bit of a Weezer thing going on, they were really good. Once they were done we grabbed some drinks and by the time I was served and turned around there was barely any more room to stand and watch the main act – how did that happen? We managed to fine a spot to squeeze into, ofcourse right behind Amazon woman! BSS came on stage about 10.30ish, yay! Half the band members were kitted out in their plaid shirts (ofcourse) and the main singer wore a hoodie and a beanie – gotta love Canadians! The show started with a bang and everyone went nuts. Half way through the show I had to go to the washroom – oh no! Getting out of the crowd was one thing but getting back to my spot was something else. People just refused to move out of the way so I had to elbow a few bellies (after asking nicely to please move) and just force my way through this sardine packed crowd. It was super hot inside despite all the patio doors being open in the middle of winter. Needless to say there was no spac to move, let alone dance. What do you do when your body wants to move to some awesome tunage and there is just no space?…jump up and down ofcourse! The show was definitely worth the wait and I cannot wait to see BSS again. They sound amazing live and came back for an encore, twice! The show ended at 12.45am – how time flies when you are having fun!On the way out we noticed some of the band members standing outside chatting to a few fans while enjoying a few local beers, Macs Gold to be precise – good choice! I walked home, grabbed some BK and climbed into bed.

This was the final day of the Stray trip and it has been epic so far. Every night we’ve been up to the wee hours of the morning partying and everyday we are up early doing a really cool activity. Today we were going try and get on the river to do some white water rafting in Rotorua, but the river was still running really high so we weren’t able to get on it. This wasn’t such a bad thing as 4 days and a total of 6 hours sleep had finally caught up with me. If we were able to get on the river I would have jumped at it, but let’s just say I wasn’t overally disappointed to be chilling on a bus hehe. Ill be back to do the river, hopefully on an other Stray tour.
We just toured back to Auckland and then hit the fat camel for a couple drinks to end the trip. The people I met on the trip were amazing. I have to say the whole group got a long great! I definitely made some good friends on this trip.
Overall it was a great experience. I know I made it out to sound like a complete piss up and for me it was, but Stray really isn’t just about getting people drunk. There were plenty of people on the trip that weren’t interested in drinking and were there to see New Zealand. There was no ribbing or trying to get them to drink. Stray really tried to get everyone to enjoy himself or herself and catered to each person. They provide a true kiwi experience and take you to places that kiwis like to go to. I want to give a big shout out to Stray Travel. If you are looking to do a tour in NZ, go with Stray you will not be disappointed. The drivers are knowledgeable, friendly and outgoing people. Our guides were just as interested in getting to know us as we were in getting to know them. Do a Stray tour you will not regret it.

This is the start of the hike. I think I was still drunk at this point.
Knock, knock, knock.. WTF? Didn’t I just go to bed? I open the door and there is Casey, our Stray guide, letting us know that we are leaving for the a hike in 15 mins. Time to get up and get ready for a full day of hiking. This wasn’t supposed to be. The night prior we were told that the chances of us getting on the mountain were slim to none. I guess the weather wasn’t as bad as predicted and we were able to get up the mountain for a bit. After the haze wore off I was pretty stoked. I really wanted to do this hike and was disappointed when I heard that we weren’t going to do it. I tossed on some thermals, shorts and a sweater, grabbed my toque and sunnies, filled up my bag with water and I was good to go. We then headed over to the Adrift Guided Outdoor Adventures to pick up some hiking boots and wet pants to keep us dry and warm. If you didn’t have gear they can fully suit you up with hiking shoes, coats, pants, toques, ice axes and cramp-ons and gloves. We then grabbed some breakfast and loaded back on to the bus.
Everyone was hung over. It was fantastic. Once we got to the trail head we unloaded and had a chat with our guide Stewart Barclay. He told us the conditions weren’t great, but we would be able to get at least a ¼ of the way down the track and for those who were keen and adventurous could push on with him while the others would walk back to the bus.

Heaps fo natural beauty all around us!
So we began to walk. The weather was foggy and damp; it gave the mountain an eerie feeling. We trudged a long and you could tell right away who was going to be up for the long walk. After about 2 hours of walking we came to the devils staircase. This is where the group split into two groups; one heading up the mountain, one heading back to bed. I didn’t come all this way to go to bed, so up the moutain I went. As soon as we started up, the temperature dropped and the wind picked up. Nice! This was going to be an epic hike!

We had to jump a couple streams. I managed to not go in.. cant say that about everybody.
As we progressed up the mountain the weather kept getting shittier. It started to hail, then snow/rain and then full on snowing. I felt like I was back in Canada. Another couple hours and we were at the top of the southern crater. Here it was blowing like crazy. Stewart said it was about 55-60km gust.. sick! The snow was pelting our faces and Visibility was shit – I loved every second of this. After a brief chat with Stewart we all found our selves lost (not Stewart) and we quickly learned that with the snow and blowing winds it is very easy to loose your bearings. One of the guys with us, Nick was all geared out. He brought his own ice axe and clamp-ons, had a special bag, gortex jacket, but didn’t have one essential thing; gloves. We definitely took the piss out of him for that. Luckily Stewart had a couple extra toques so Nick had to use them as gloves. Yes, he looked like a dumb ass but he was warm. In the end that is all the matters. Stewart loved being up the mountain in the snow and told us this was his favourite hiking weather as no one is on the track. We walked to the half-way point and then had to head back as there wasn’t enough light to carry on.
Coming down was definitely more difficult than going up. You really had to watch were you put your feet and most of us were already pretty tired from the walk up. At the bottom of the devil staircase we had a bite to eat and then headed on our way. We went from fog, to rain, to sleet, to snow, to a full on snowstorm back to sleet and then rain. I definitely prefer the snow. You really stay much drier with snow since it really kind of just bounces off of you.
After a long walk back we were picked up by a Adrift who had some beers in a cooler for us. Sweet! We rocked back to the lodge and headed straight into the hot tub. I was beat. We wall hiked all day on pretty much 2 hours sleep. After an hour in the hot tub we were all starving so we had some dinners and then as per usual the booze started to flow. I really didn’t think I had much left in my tank, but after a couple shots I was back in party mode.
About half of the group went off to bed while the other half partied away in the common room of the Travelers Lodge. At about 2:30am it started to snow. We had two kiwi’s and an Australian that had never seen snow before. I took their snow cherries – nothing sweeter for a canuck! As they ran around in the snow, in pure joy and amazement I started pelting them with snowballs. At about 4:30am we shut it down as we were going white water rafting tomorrow. What a great day. I cant wait to come back to do the whole crossing. I really thought the hike would be intense, but it wasn’t that bad. There were no ‘what the hell am I doing here’ moments – so a success in my books!

Hells Gate, Rotorua; mud baths and geothermal spa!
With only about 3hours sleep again it was early to rise to eat some breaky and get back on the bus to head off to Rotorua. The plan for today was to do some white water rafting with Kaitiaki Adventures. Unfortunately the river was too high so we were unable to raft, so the Stray guys came up with an alternate plan; hit up Hells Gate. About a month or so ago I hit up Hells Gate with Michelle, so I knew what we were up too. We took a tour of the park and all of the geothermal activity and then hit up the mud baths and spa pools. I was pretty stoked to be back in the spa. It is definitely a must do if you make it too NZ.

Huka Falls, Taupo
After a couple hours in Rotorua at Hells Gate we headed down the road to Tongariro National Park. While passing through Taupo we hit up Huka Falls. It was pretty incredible. At the Huka Falls the Waikato river (The Waikato river is one of New Zealand’s longest rivers and it drains Lake Taupo – the largest freshwater lake in all of Australasia), which is normally 100 meters wide, forces it self through 20 meter wide gorge and over a 20 meter drop. Every second up to 220,000 litres of water gushes through the gorge and shoots out over 8 metres beyond to create a beautiful blue/green pool.

The Water Fall, Huka Falls
After viewing the Huka falls we headed into Taupo for some lunch. The bus dropped us off in the center of town and we went our separate ways to get a good feed. Taupo is definitely a place I want to come back too. It looks like it has some pretty cool hiking trails and ive heard that they have some mountain bike tracks that rival Rotorua. So Ill be back to ride those.

Stray bus at the Park Traveller Lodge
After lunch we boarded the bus for the rest of the ride to the National Park. We were staying at the Park Travellers Lodge. I stayed here when I was on my Spaceship trip so I knew what to expect; a great facility with clean rooms, hot tubs, great location and amazing staff.

The court yard at The Park Travellers Lodge. Two hot tubs!! You can hardly see them, but just above the roofline are the mountains.
This time I stayed in a smaller 4-bed room, unlike last time where I shared a 6-bunk room. I really like the 4 bed room and would recommend that over the bunks. In all honesty I was just happy to not have to share a room with the snorer of the trip – thank god. After unpacking we headed to the bar for dinner and some drinks. After dinner we had our court session for dick of the day and met with our guide from Adrift Guided Outdoor Adventures. The next day we had planned to do the Tangario Crossing but unfortunately it was looking like the weather wasn’t in our favour. That being said everyone kind of cut loose and it was another full on night of drinking. We headed down to the local bar where a couple was having their wedding reception. The drinks and shots were flowing like water and we shut it down around 4:30am again. So far the trip has been one epic night after another!
